The Exceptional Solutions for Attainable Housing Toolkit

Why a Toolkit?

Our cities and towns seek better-built, innovative, and desirable homes where individuals and families can find a sense of place, pride, and community. By bringing together designers, developers, builders, nonprofits, and municipal representatives, we looked at the topic from a wide lens to tackle this complexity in an impactful way. This toolkit will help us achieve our goals.

What is Attainable Housing?

Attainable housing is generally market-rate and historically achievable for those earning between 80% and 120% of Area Median Income (AMI) as defined by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The intent is for households to spend (via rental or ownership) around 30% of their income on housing costs. While attainable housing is not directly subsidized or deed restricted, by distinguishing it from affordable housing, government intervention may still encourage the housing supply through incentives, development regulations, or housing ordinances.
